La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi ARENA DI VERONA FESTIVAL LIRICO 2019
LA TRAVIATA (Opera in 3 acts - Music by G. Verdi - Libretto by F. M. Piave)
La Traviata is a three-act Opera composed by Giuseppe Verdi, that together with Il Trovatore and Rigoletto is part of the so-called "trilogia popolare".
The Libretto has been written by Francesco Maria Piave, while the story was based on the play "The Lady with the Camelias" by the French playwriter Alexandre Dumas.
The first performance took place in 1853 at Teatro La Fenice in Venice and did not reach the expected sucess. According to Verdi's opinion the opera's fail was due to bad singers, but before other productions, La Traviata was modified and adapted by censorship.
Since the Opera harshly criticized the middle-class society, the cronological setting was changed from the XIX to the XVIII century.
On the 1st August 2019 Placido Domingo will sind, performing for the first time in Arena the most important of Verdi's paternal characters: Giorgio Germont, the father of Alfredo.
