Tosca by Giacomo Puccini ARENA DI VERONA FESTIVAL LIRICO 2017
TOSCA (Opera in 3 acts - Music by Giacomo Puccini - Libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa)
Tosca is a three acts Opera composed by Giacomo Puccini and with Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica's libretto.
Puccini is together with Leoncavallo, Mascagni, Franchetti, Giordano and Cilea a member of the so-named "Giovine Scuola", which represents a new lyrical saison characterized by composers' and playwriters' creativity.
In year 1889 Puccini attended Tosca's representation by Victorien Sardou at Teatro dei Filodrammatici in Milan, and he was so impressed, that decided to obtain an Opera. He asked then publisher Giulio Ricordi to contact
Sardou in order to have the rights.
The Parisian playwriter was not so enthusiast, but he did not deny the offer. He rather granted the authorization in year 1893, even though he claimed as author Alberto Franchetti and not Puccini. For this reason Puccini
decided to withdraw from Tosca's composition and to apply himdelf to "La Bohème". In 1895 Franchetti gave up and entrustes Tosca to Puccini. The writing of libretto was by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica.
Tosca was performed in 1900 at Teatro Costanzi in Rome; it was initially rejected by the press, but it soon became one of the most important and known repertoire's Operas.
